sauna + cold plunge – why contrast therapy helps

alternating heat and cold is known as contrast therapy, an ancient practice with growing scientific support. like massage (another ancient practice supported by science), warmth from the sauna increases circulation, relaxes muscles, and supports parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) activity. brief cold exposure then stimulates circulation, sharpens sensory awareness, and can help regulate the stress response.

together, heat and cold gently exercise the nervous system – encouraging adaptability, recovery, and resilience. many people report improved sleep, reduced muscle soreness, and a greater sense of calm and clarity after contrast sessions.
